IT'S ABOUT TIME for STELLALUNA RESOURCES!

STELLALUNA, by Janelle Cannon, is not only one of my favorite picture books, but a unit I love to teach in the fall. For one week, I immerse my 1st and 2nd graders in all things batty.

To that end, I have created Hanging Out with Stellaluna, a thematic unit that includes activities for literacy centers, math centers, writing, poetry, word work, math journal prompts, lots of printable worksheets, and more! This unit is also available digitally on TPT Easel.

Naturally, center work includes bat related activities.  Tangram Puzzles tailored to the story make a fun math center.

There are 2 phonics centers.  Bat Blends provides practice with consonant blends.

Bats & Bridges is a phonics sort focusing on vowel sounds.
Both phonics centers are also available digitally on TPT Easel.

You can get all of these materials in a bundle that will save you 30%!

IT'S ABOUT TIME for SCARECROWS!

It's about time, teachers, for SCARECROWS!

Nothing embodies fall quite like a scarecrow.  Now that it's officially fall, it's time for scarecrow activities.

The above video depicts all the products in my SCARECROW BUNDLE.

That's 4 products plus a FREEBIE at a 30% discount.

The FREEBIE is a fun SCARECROW GLYPH.

The other components are:
  1. a thematic unit provided in print and digital formats.  Subject matter includes ELA, poetry, math, music, and crafts.

  2. a SIGHT WORD coloring activity based on the Dolch word lists.

  3. a SPIN-TALLY-GRAPH math center that is differentiated.

  4. a differentiated LATIN SQUARES ACTIVITY that can be used in intermediate classes, too!  It is also provided digitally on TPT Easel.

Start the School Year on the Right Foot

Start the new school year off on the right foot with one sole-full day of activities.

This thematic unit is the perfect way to introduce your learners to each other, classroom  procedures, expectations, as well as multiple curricular disciplines.

Kick off  the new school year by having a SNEAKER DAY!  Invite your students to wear sneakers to school, then fill the day with math, writing, art, and get acquainted activities.

Send a note home to alert parents to their child's need to wear sneakers.

Then use those sneakers for math:

  • collect data and create graphs
  • measurement
  • Venn diagrams
  • estimation
  • counting and computation
  • and much more!
Sneak in some ELA:
  • descriptive words
  • writing center with prompts
  • and more!
Step up to some arts and crafts:
  • sole-full rubbings
  • shoestring painting
  • and more!

You will love sneaking into a new year!

CHINESE NEW YEAR ACTIVITIES and RESOURCES

How do you celebrate the Chinese New Year? In my classroom, I use poetry to introduce the celebration. The following poem introduces some of the holiday traditions:

Chinese children will greet their parents and other adults by saying, "Gung Hay Fat Choy," which means wishing you great happiness and prosperity. Naturally, we greet the adults in our school with this phrase.

The dragon dance is often conducted in the streets during Chinese New Year. My students create a parade of their own using these templates:

We make a dragon for the parade, keeping in mind that the longer the dragon, the greater the luck it bestows.  To make the dragon's body, create an accordian fold. Use 2 strips of paper about 1.5" wide.  Choose different colors and make the strips as long as you like.  Begin by gluing the strips together.

The head in these pictures is a template that can be colored or printed in color.

Of course I have a poem dedicated just to the Dragon Dance.

Along the way, I incorporate other learning. These activities are part of my Winter Poetry Possibilities unit. The possibilities provide a plethora of lessons from various disciplines.
