Boom! Learning Preview

It's about time, teachers, for another preview of --

Last week I highlighted a phonics sort for young learners, The Green Giraffe. Now have a peek at something for upper grade students...

ThumbnailThis FREE set of cards challenges your students to use their critical thinking skills to create word relationships.

Here's how Triads work: find a word that can be added to each of the words on the Triads.

The common word comes before or after each of the 3 words to make a familiar phrase or a compound word. In this example, the common word for the Triad is CAT; CAT litter, CATnap, and black CAT.

All of the answers for this deck are fill in the blank. So, students type in cat, then hit "Submit," and get instant feedback.

You will absolutely love watching your students' "light bulb" moments.

This is a great activity for a literacy center or enrichment. It could also be used as an anchor or sponge activity. Fast finishers love this challenge! So, why not give them a try? If you like this challenge, try the next deck:

Boom!

It's about time, teachers, that you discover

You have a smart board. You need resources for your smart board. You need Boom! Learning.

This is a relatively new site that offers teachers resources that are ready to use on interactive whiteboards. All of the apps are created by teachers for teachers.

In the month since I discovered this site, I have been busy uploading resources; 24 decks and 2 bundles, so far.  Now the problem is, how do I get YOU to be as excited about this as I am?

Perhaps a preview will help you realize the potential...

And so it continues.

There you have an interactive phonics center that does not require any printing, cutting, laminating, or storage solutions.  It will work on tablets or laptops, as well.

This is just my 1st preview.  If you teach older students, I have plenty of decks for you. Check back soon for more previews.

BOOM! Learning Cards for Your Interactive Whiteboard

Last week I discovered

Have you checked it out yet?

I thought you might appreciate a little preview of how these cards could work in your classroom. This preview is based on my deck, Monsters Love Contractions.

This is a screenshot of 1 of the cards.  It is what a student sees.

The student types his/her answers in the boxes.

Once s/he has typed in both answers, s/he clicks on "Submit."

(I was too slow to get a screenshot of it!) It does not tell whether the answer is right or wrong.

After the student has completed the deck, s/he will get a message and earn some rewards.

The site provides an explanation of the rewards.
It's really easy to set up your class.  I'm an enrichment specialist, so I have more than 1 class.  That is possible, too.

Following is an example of a report for the teacher.

If you haven't checked out Boom Learning, you really should.  I think it holds great promise for all teachers.

Please visit my store @ Boom Learning. Thus far, I have 14 decks and I add more every day.

It's About Time, Teachers, for a Learning Explosion!

It’s about time, teachers, for an explosion!

A learning explosion, that is.  An explosion you are going to love, Love, LOVE!!!!

Most of us have interactive whiteboards (yea!). Most of us struggle to find the time to create the digitized lessons and centers we would love to use with our whiteboards (boo!). Most of us know that teacher created lessons are the best.  What most of us don't know is that there is a new kid in town to help us with interactive whiteboard activities.

It’s about time, teachers, that you discover ...

Boom Learning is a relatively new site that offers decks of Boom Cards for your whiteboard lessons.
  • No more printing.
  • No more cutting.
  • No more laminating.
  • No more grading.

  • Much more engagement.
  • Much more information at the speed of a click.
  • Much more 21st century style learning and teaching.
  • Much more fun!

Boom Learning resources offer interactive lessons that are self-grading.  They provide instant reports on the progress and success of each of your students. They make it possible to use all of those adorable task cards without buying stock in printer ink.

I discovered Boom Cards just this week and, honestly, I feel like I've won the lottery.  So many of the resources I've created for TPT are perfect for digital task cards.  This woman is obsessed with transfering those products to this platform!  In just a few days, I have created 10 decks.  Naturally, I hope you will take time to look at my products (all under $2).  But even if my resources are not what you seek, I think you will LOVE this site and all it has to offer.

Your time is precious.  There's never enough time. Time is of the essence.  It's about time, teachers, to discover BOOM CARDS!

Black History Month

It's about time, teachers, for Black History Month. Are you looking for some curricula? Have you tried teaching through poetry?

Black History Month Poetry Possibilities offers 14 poems (copy ready for their anthologies) about these notable African Americans:
  • Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Harriet Tubman
  • Garret Morgan
  • Granville T. Woods
  • George Washington Carver
  • Matthew Henson
  • Jackie Robinson
  • Leontyne Price
  • Muhammed Ali
  • Guion Stewart Bluford, Jr.
  • Rosa Parks

While each poem provides important information about each of these people, the teaching possibilities extend the learning in myriad ways.  For example, this poem about the astronaut, Guion Stewart Bluford, Jr., provides lots of information about the man and his accomplishments.  But the poem provides many more opportunities for learning.  Note the unusual form of the poem.

That form is quite effective in presenting information.  So, why not have your students apply it to another subject?  It could focus on another notable African American, or it could be applied to something closer to home - mom.

This teaching possibility is described in #2 below.

As you can see above, the Poetry Possibilities provide suggestions for other subject matter, as well.

Each poem has a teaching point that applies to poetry.  After all, students should learn to appreciate poetry as a literary form.

That teaching point leads to another teaching possibility:

A quick review of basic grammar is always a good idea.

The teaching possibilities need not be limited to language arts and history.  The 3rd possibility for this poem invites students to employ a Venn Diagram in comparing the astronaut to another man of science, George Washington Carver.  A template is provided:

By using some or all of the Poetry Possibilities provided for this collection of poems, you will have plenty of curricula for this special month.

Life teaches us to make good use of TIME, while TIME teaches us the value of life.
