High Flying Kites

It's about time for flying kites, teachers!

Here's an idea for a center, individual work, or partners' activity.

Create colorful kites from construction paper. Write a number in the center of each shape. Laminate the kites. Then give a kite to each group or individual. Instruct your students to use wipe-off markers to write as many math facts as they can about the given number. Post the kites on a bulletin board.  Allow students to create tails for their kites using string and pieces of crepe paper.  They can add a colorful tie for each fact they wrote.

Obviously this activity can be used for any operation and within whatever range of numbers are appropriate to your students.  It could also be used for seasonal words and their synonyms or other vocabulary exercises.

My favorite way of doing these kites is to have partners work together. This increases their perseverance and improves accuracy.

Freebie February Day 28

It's about time, teachers, to say good-bye to February and hello to March.

In March, our thoughts turn to all things green -- not just for St. Patrick's Day, but for the heralding of spring.  Ah spring.  Please hurry.

To encourage spring, I'm offering Poetry Possibilities for Spring as the final gift of Freebie February.

This is a collection of 20 poems about spring weather, holidays, and activities.  Each print-ready poem is accompanied by a teaching point that enriches your students' understanding of poetry.  Also included are activities, skill lessons, writing projects, a literacy center, and craftivities custom designed for that poem. There are even instructions for a class play of The Very Hungry Caterpillar

If you love teaching with poetry (and I hope you do), this product will take you all the way to Memorial Day.  But remember, this product is free for just 1 day.

You may like these products just for March. Some are FREE!

Freebie February and Egg Equations

It's day 27 of Freebie February! Here in the midwest, the temperatures are miserably cold.  So, I'm warming myself by thinking about spring. (That and wearing lots of layers!)

In the spirit of spring thoughts, today's freebie is Egg Equations. It's a cute little math center that fits well with spring themes, Easter (although it is holiday neutral), and farm themes.

Here's a preview of this center...

My students get really eggs-cited about this yolk center.  Give it a crack!

Teachers are Heroes TPT Sale + Freebie February

It's the last day of the Teachers are Heroes sale on TPT.

There are lots of awesome resources on sale.

Today's also day 26 of Freebie February. Lunchbox Literacy Center is a fun activity about compound words and it's free just for 1 day.

Using the 30 word cards, your students will find pairs that make compound words associated with school. They can simply match cards to make up to 15 words. Or, for an extra challenge, have them arrange the cards face down in a 5 x 6 array in order to play Memory.

I like to use this center early in the school year.  It's great for back to school as the kiddos are getting focused on all things related to school.  Plus, they are likely to have a new lunchbox. Grab your copy now and you'll have plenty of time to get it ready for next year.

Freebie February and Lost Tooth Tales

You probably use math journals. Do you need some subject matter for those prompts? During Dental Health Month, you have ample material. After all, losing and gaining teeth is a natural subtraction and addition situation.

Make the journal prompts extra interesting by programming the problems with your students' names. For example:

For a fun math center, put the tooth problems on tooth shapes. Copy them on cardstock and laminate. Store them at the center inside the pillowcase on an infant sized pillow.

And now, it's about time for today's February Freebie:

MAD about MARCH, a Thematic Unit for Primary Grades includes activities in language arts, math, and music.

The activities in this unit are field tested and most appropriate for K – 2 classrooms. They include opportunities for differentiation of instruction and enrichment.

Remember, it's only free for 1 day.

Freebie February Day 23

Now that the popular holidays of February are over (Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day, Presidents' Day, Fat Tuesday, ...),

it's about time to give some attention to Dental Health Month.

I love to use graphs for an anchor activity, so naturally, my students are asked to graph their responses to some dental health questions.

Other questions I use include:
  • What brand of toothpaste do you use?
  • How many times did you brush your teeth yesterday?
  • Have you been to the dentist since your last birthday?
  • How many teeth have you lost?

During our morning meeting, we discuss math concepts inherent in the graph, as well as the obvious dental health topics.

The teeth are laminated card stock.  I write their names with a Vis-a-Vis marker so that I can erase them and use them again next year.  There is a small piece of magnetic tape on the back so the students can easily attach them to my white board.  Try some dental health graphing.  I think you'll like it.

Today's FREEBIE is Hink Pinks for Kinders III.

These cards are the perfect introduction to hink pinks because they do not require reading. Each card has an image that evokes the 2 rhyming words of the hink pink. (Remember, hink pinks are 1 syllable words.)

Did you get the answer to this one?  It's best vest. Young learners love these riddles once they get the hang of them.  They are also great for speech & language specialists.  Lots of ESL teachers use them for their English language learners.

Enjoy!
